Wherever you live and whatever you do, safety should always be a priority. From keeping out home invaders to safeguarding valuables, strong door locks and secure combinations are essential to protect you and your property from harm. With an increasing number of locks relying on codes, rather than keys, here are four tips you need to know to create secure passcodes.

4 Tips for Secure Door Lock Codes

1. Avoid Obvious Dates

Most key codes and lock combinations require numbers, either alone or combined with letters and symbols. Because of this, many people select dates as a part of their passcode. While dates such as your birthday, a child’s birthday, or your wedding anniversary are easy to remember, they’re also easy for others to guess. Avoid such obvious dates and select a number it would be difficult for others to guess.

2. Use a Mnemonic Device

A mnemonic device is a way of putting useful information into a meaningless, but easy to remember, package. For instance, Roy G. Biv is used as a way to remember the colors of the rainbow, as each letter represents a color. When you recall Roy G. Biv, you can remember that the letters stand for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Similarly, you may choose a mnemonic device which associates numbers with their corresponding letters in the alphabet if a word, even a nonsensical one, is easier for you to remember.

3. Change Passcodes & Locks

You should change all passcodes, including those on your phone, computer, house, and safes, at least twice a year. This reduces the risk that someone who’s been observing your property will be able to guess the combination. Also, if you have house guests, consider giving them a temporary passcode to delete after they depart. If you’re worried you won’t be able to remember the new code, only change it slightly by switching around a couple of numbers. Never reuse old codes.

4. Hire a Professional to Change Combinations

When it comes to security, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. One of the best ways to ensure your property is secure is to invest in professional services. When you need a lock or combination changed, hire a reputable professional to do it instead of attempting the job yourself. Professionals know how to do the job correctly, efficiently, and can provide additional security-enhancing tips as well.
