Unsung Heroes

I had the opportunity to speak to the CAP’s Glastonbury Support on Thursday, January 17th.  I spoke about the many initiatives CAP is undertaking.  I also led the “Caregivers” breakout session. I reminded the group in front of me that CAP’s Support Groups are there to “support” not only those with Parkinson’s, but also their loved ones.

I told my personal story regarding my Wife Michelle’s diagnose. She was only forty years old when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. My kids were only thirteen and eight. Since Michelle has managed her symptoms extremely well, I’ve always felt my main undertaking has been to give my spiritual and emotional support.  Personally, I never feel I am “giving” care. However, I appreciate that each person has their own unique story of when their loved one was diagnosed and their own journey with Parkinson’s.  Everyone in the group was given an opportunity to tell their own unique story.  We all listened and offered our opinions when solicited.  One common denominator for all of us was the desire to do what was best for them, but not once did any of the group ask for help themselves. The strength and resiliency of this group really amazed me.

To me, the individuals in this group are unsung heroes. They offer their love and support unconditionally. If you are a member of this group, please remember that while your loved one’s diagnoses may transform your life, you can and should continue to experience all the joys of life you always have.  Please remember to live in the moment while you and your loved one face Parkinson’s together.

CAP is here for caregivers. Whether your loved one was recently diagnosed or adapting to the new challenges as the disease progresses, a strong support group can be essential to your well being.

If you or a loved one has never attended a CAP support group meeting, we would love to see you there.  Contact information can be found on our website at www.parkinsonsct.org
