Preventative maintenance is a major part of keeping your vehicle running at peak performance. This includes scheduling routine oil changes. While your dashboard does have a light that will turn on when it’s time to replace the oil, it’s best to recognize the signs early on so you can prevent any wear and tear on the engine. Here’s what you need to look out for.

How to Tell When Your Car Needs an Oil Change

1. Mileage

As a general rule of thumb, you should replace the oil in your engine every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. However, the exact timeframe may also depend on the make and model of your vehicle. Consult the vehicle owner’s manual for specific instructions pertaining to your car.

2. Engine Noise

oil change Motor oil is responsible for lubricating the metal components in the engine, preventing them from grinding against each other. Dirty or low oil will fail to perform this function, which is why you may start to hear loud grinding noises when idling or starting up the engine.

3. Dark Oil

You should check your engine oil at least once a month. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it off, insert it back in, and then pull it out once more to inspect the color of the oil. Clean oil is amber or light brown in color. If the oil is dark, this is a sign you need to schedule an oil change.
