Planning and caring for the yard around and above your septic system are essential maintenance steps. Though your tank and drain field are usually buried in about 2 to 4 feet of soil, they’re still vulnerable to tree and shrub roots that can infiltrate the pipes, causing clogs and leakage. To avoid needing root removal and other repairs, try landscaping with the following options.

What to Plant Over Your Septic System

1. Grasses

Because grass has roots only a few inches deep, it doesn't threaten your septic system. If you want more than a simple lawn in this area, consider medium or small ornamental grasses like switchgrass, little bluestem grass, fountain grass, or liriope varieties. You might also choose a hardy, low-maintenance ground cover like winecups or sunny Angelina sedum. Avoid planting directly above your tank to leave it accessible for pumping and upkeep. Alternatively, install a riser – a vertical pipe that runs from your tank’s access port to the surface – so it’s easy for your septic company to reach.

2. Flower Garden

Septic SystemIt's not safe to plant edible greens or vegetables over a drain field, as they can absorb harmful bacteria from the soil. However, you can plant flowers in this area. They may even benefit from the extra nutrients. Choose short, shallow-rooted annuals and perennials like petunias, snapdragons, lobelia, daylilies, and daffodils.

3. Shallow-Rooted Shrubs

If your septic system is buried a little deeper – three feet or more underground – there may be room to plant attractive shrubs without the risk of damage. Despite growing several feet tall, dwarf hydrangea bushes usually have roots in only the first six inches of soil. Other shallow-growing options include boxwoods, viburnums, and lilac.
