Many people without access to an array of power tools are limited in the number and types of home improvement projects they can tackle. However, if you have a few basic hand tools and a power drill, you can complete a surprising number of woodworking and household projects. Below is a list of some of the jobs you can tackle with little more than a drill.

Projects That Only Require a Power Drill

1. Replace Lighting Fixtures

Power toolsWhether you want a larger chandelier or you're unhappy with the lighting arrangement in your bathroom, you can typically complete the project even if the only power tool you have is a drill. You'll want a screwdriver bit to make it easy to remove the fastening screws, and you will likely need to drill additional holes in the wall or ceiling, since the screw size and mounting pattern of the new fixture will likely differ from the old one.

2. Make Candle Holders

You can transform a piece of driftwood or an attractive chunk of dowel rod into one or more candle holders with little more than a drill and maybe some paint and glue. Drill one or more evenly spaced "starter" holes in the top of the driftwood or the chunk of dowel. Follow that with a brad-point bit of the right diameter. Sink the hole an inch deep to seat the candle securely. You can then glue the dowel upright to a square piece of 1x4 as a support base and paint the wood or leave it natural.

3. Create a Coat Rack

You'll first need to find or purchase a piece of 2-foot long 2x4—if necessary, you can have it cut to size when you buy it at the hardware store—and a half-dozen coat hooks with mounting screws. Mark hole locations every 3 or 4 inches using a ruler, and drop starter holes so you don't split the wood while screwing in the hooks. Paint or stain it and let it dry. Tap the wall where you intend to hang it to locate the studs; drill mounting holes into the wall and studs. Drill an additional two holes in the coat rack to accommodate the mounting screws. Attach hooks and mount the finished product.
