February 9 marks National Toothache Day. While dental discomfort might not be cause for celebration, it’s a good reminder to always consult a local dentist if a member of your family is in pain. Serious problems, like a cavity or abscess, could be to blame. Find out what you can do to ease the toothache until you make it to the dental clinic.

3 Home Toothache Treatments

1. Swish With Saltwater

A warm saltwater rinse combats oral inflammation and kills bacteria. Vigorous swishing can also clean away debris that may be irritating the gums. Mix one teaspoon of table salt into a small cup of warm water, and then swish and spit. Supervise kids as needed to make sure they don’t swallow.

2. Try a Pain-Reliever

If you are treating a child, make sure the medication is age-appropriate. Look for kid-safe medications in liquid format since children can struggle with swallowing pills. Until the pills kick in, apply an icepack or gel-filled compress to the outside of the cheek where the pain is occurring.

3. Check the Kitchen Cabinets

If you prefer all-natural remedies, your kitchen may have the answer. Clove oil works as a topical analgesic and has antibacterial properties. Apply a few drops to a cotton swab and dab around the hurting tooth. Garlic is another option; smash a clove up into a paste and let it sit for ten minutes before applying it directly to the affected area. Conclude with a saltwater rinse.

Experiencing a toothache is bad enough – but as a loving parent, watching your child experience the pain can be even worse. If your little one is dealing with dental discomfort, take them to see local dentist Brandi Prather, DMD, PSC of Somerset, KY. Dr. Brandi and her team have been serving the community’s families for over ten years. They know how to make kids feel at ease while providing top-quality dental care.
