When your tree shows signs of infestation or injury—such as a cracked trunk—it can cause damage to your property. However, it’s not always easy to spot a diseased tree or know when to step in and provide tree care. Here are five common ailments, their signs, and what you can do about each one.

What to Spot to Determine Tree Care

1. Infected Branch

A branch with yellow or barely any leaves may be infected with fungus or bugs, causing it to eventually break and fall. Look for one part of the tree where the leaves are a different color, or in winter, where the leaves stay on even after the rest fall. Talk to a tree trimming company about removing the branch before the infection spreads.

2. Cracks in the Trunk

A cracked trunk can break the tree in half if there are severe winds, rainstorms, heavy snow, or hail. This endangers surrounding structures, including your home and garage, as well as any nearby vehicles. To prevent a fallen tree, consult with a local tree care specialist, who can either cut below the crack and preserve the stump, or unearth the remainder of the tree if it’s not salvageable.

3. Dead or Dying

When a tree's main trunk is damaged or diseased, it may be past saving. Look for bark that falls off and doesn't grow back, or fungus growth on the trunk, which indicates internal rot. Over time, a dead tree may weaken and fall. Ask your local tree service how they dispose of the wood, as it could be used for firewood—if it’s not entirely diseased—or recycled.
