The service options you provide at your dentistry office play an important role in promoting patient comfort and convenience. In particular, crowns are a common solution offered, which is why it’s important to make sure you select the right type to fit your patients’ needs. Two common types are metal-free and porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM). Here are a few of the differences and benefits of these two materials.

A Guide to Metal-Free Ceramic Crowns vs. PFM Crowns

Metal-Free Ceramic

Metal-free ceramic, also known as all-ceramic, can be made from different types of materials, including zirconia, lithium disilicate, and lucite-reinforced glass and has been favored as an alternative to PFM. Metal-free options are commonly used as a non-allergenic solution for patients who face a risk of a reaction or body rejection. It replaced resin-based crowns, as it has a higher fracture resistance. Ceramic also tends to be preferred over porcelain because it’s stronger, but its toughness also comes with a caveat, as it may inhibit the ability to spot tooth decay underneath.

PFM

These crowns require more of the tooth to be removed than metal-free ceramic. It consists of a metal shell that’s affixed to the tooth with a porcelain veneer fused to the metal layer. While PFM tends to be natural-looking and more affordable, it leaves a minimal dark line between the crown and the tooth. PFM is hailed for its durability, as it can last many years with proper oral care.

crownIt’s considered the golden standard in dentistry, and it makes it an appealing choice for many professionals and their patients. However, patients with cosmetic or allergy concerns may prefer metal-free, so having a range of options may be worthwhile, depending on the size and goals of your practice.
