If your adolescent is between 13 and 15 years old, it may be time to schedule her first OB-GYN visit. For many girls, a first trip to the gynecologist can seem intimidating. In addition to the nerves that come with any new experience, they may also be uncomfortable with talking about their health and privacy. Knowing what to expect, however, will go a long way towards putting your daughter at ease and helping her gain a deeper understanding of her reproductive health. Use the following steps to help prepare.

4 Ways to Help Your Teen Prepare for Her First Gynecologist Visit

1. Ask Her If She Wants a Male or Female Physician

Many OB-GYN services feature men and women doctors so their patients have options. Ask your daughter about what would make her most comfortable and accommodate her choice.

2. Talk About the Type of Questions She May Be Asked

Sit down with your daughter and explain to her that she might be asked intimate questions, such as how old she was when she got her first period, when her last period was, or if she’s sexually active. Explain to her the importance of communicating freely and honestly with her OB-GYN, and let her know you do not have to be in the room when she answers these questions.

3. Go Over the Physical Examination

gynecologistReview what the physical examination entails. Certain parts may be familiar from her pediatrician appointments, such as weighing and taking blood pressure measurements. Be as detailed as possible. While your daughter may not like the sound of a breast exam, pelvic exam, a speculum, or cervical swab, it’s better that she know exactly what to expect and why these essential services must be performed. Explaining these elements of the appointment to her will also build trust between you and show her that you respect her as an adult. Clarify that while these procedures may be uncomfortable, they are painless, and the doctor will respect her boundaries.

4. Emphasize the Benefits

Stress the benefits of seeing the gynecologist to your daughter, such as accessing preventive care that will identify issues promptly and provide more effective treatment. Encourage her to ask both you and her medical providers questions and seek clarification when she doesn’t understand the answers. Most importantly, reassure her that you’ll be there for her no matter what.
