When the temperature drops and the snowy days come, most business owners wonder how they will tackle snow and ice removal more efficiently. While plowing and shoveling can be incredibly helpful, applying layers of ice melt can melt snow and ice, making the area easier for customers to traverse. However, salt is notoriously damaging for asphalt, which is why it pays to pay attention to what you are using, how much, and when you apply it. Here are three tips for using ice melt on asphalt.

Ways to Melt Ice Without Damaging Asphalt

1. Choose the Right Melting Product

Although all ice melt might seem the same in the store, different varieties melt ice in different temperatures, and some are more damaging to paved surfaces than others. Standard table salt, or sodium chloride, is only effective in temperatures 15 degrees Fahrenheit and warmer, and calcium chloride, while effective in temperatures as low as -50 degrees Fahrenheit, can damage asphalt. To protect your parking lot and sidewalks, opt for magnesium chloride, which is effective at temperatures as low as -13 degrees Fahrenheit, but won’t harm your asphalt.

2. Mix Salt With Sandasphalt

To save money on ice melt and to reduce its impact on your asphalt, consider mixing the salt you choose with another non-reactive material, such as sand. In addition to adding more traction, mixing the products helps you to use less salt, which reduces damage.

3. Apply Sparingly

While many business owners find themselves thinking about laying down salt whenever they see a storm on the horizon, you should only apply ice melt products when absolutely necessary. If snow is expected but it will be warm enough not to allow the moisture to stick, skip the salt. You can also prevent damage by avoiding salting when your business is closed, or focusing on physical removal methods such as hand shoveling.
