For dedicated athletes, there’s nothing as invigorating as a daily run—and they won’t let winter stop them. The frozen months do require an adjustment, however, and knowing the right strategies can help you stay safe on your jog. From weather awareness to proper sporting goods, here are a few tips to assist you during your winter run.

How to Dress for a Winter Run

1. Layer Up

Wearing the proper sporting goods will protect your body from the cold. Remember that even when your internal temperature is raised due to exertions, cold can still be dangerous. You should use a synthetic garment like a long sleeve tech shirt as a base layer to wick sweat away. Also wear gloves, long pants, and a sweater, jacket, or both, depending on how cold it is. A hat that covers your ears is important for keeping heat from escaping. As you warm up, take off items and tie them around your waist if desired.

2. Consider the Wind Chill

If the perceived temperature is below zero, it’s best to find an indoor activity for your workout; don’t risk hypothermia for a jog.

3. Check for Ice & Snow

Slippery streets make it difficult to run safely. Before you begin, check what the conditions are like. A light dusting of snow will make it slightly harder to balance, but it won’t otherwise impede your run. However, if the snow is inches thick or if there’s ice coating the surfaces, it’s best to put your run off for another day. If you decide to go anyway, remember that cars will have a hard time with slipping on the roads: wear a brightly colored outer layer so they can see you, and don’t listen to music to remain more aware of your surroundings.
