Rabbits make cute, charming pets, and adopting one can be fun and rewarding. However, if you don’t have much experience with rabbit care, you might not know how to get your home ready for your new furry friend. Here are three tips to follow before bringing a bunny home.

How to Prepare for a Pet Rabbit

1. Rabbit-Proof Your Space

Bunnies have a natural instinct for digging and chewing, so it’s important to protect them and your belongings from potential harm. Enclose electrical cords in flexible tubing, protect baseboards with plastic guards, and cover loose edges of carpet where your bunny might be tempted to dig. Many plants are toxic to rabbits, so if you keep houseplants or flowers in your home, play it safe and put them out of your bunny’s reach.

2. Stock up on Supplies

rabbit careAdoption is exciting, but it can be a stressful transition for your rabbit. Before your new pet arrives, make sure you have everything you’ll need to make your bunny feel at home. Head to your local pet store and pick up these rabbit care essentials:

  • Rabbit cage or puppy crate
  • Timothy hay and pellets
  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Ceramic food and water bowls
  • Litter tray or box
  • Rabbit-friendly litter
  • Toys for chewing and tossing

3. Locate a Rabbit Vet

Not all vets have experience with rabbit care, so look for a pet hospital in your area that accepts exotic animal patients. Set up an initial appointment for your bunny to have a checkup, which may include a physical exam, vaccinations, and blood work. If you adopt a rabbit that hasn’t been spayed or neutered yet, schedule an appointment for your veterinarian to perform this surgery.
