There’s more to selecting the right pair of glasses than finding a color and a shape that you like. As you grow older, your optician may need to fit lenses in a pair of bifocals or progressives to correct your vision. That’s not unusual, even if you’ve worn single-vision lenses for nearsightedness or farsightedness for years. But which type is the right option for your eyes? Here’s what you need to know.

Bifocals Versus Progressives

What Are Bifocals?

Bifocals are lenses that contain two separate lens powers. In addition to helping you see items situated at a distance clearly, they also help you view objects up close with ease. The standard bifocal lens is distinguishable for the telltale line that appears in the center. This is essentially the dividing line that makes it easy to see everything. The topmost section is larger and is used to gaze into the distance, while the smaller bottom portion is reserved for reading. There’s usually a slight adjustment period involved in wearing bifocals but wearing them regularly helps ease the discomfort.

What Are Progressives?

Anchorage, AK glassesProgressives, on the other hand, provide the wearer with three distinct lens powers. These glasses allow you to see distances, nearby objects, and intermediate-level items, like computer screens. Unlike the basic bifocal lens, there are no visible lines on progressive lenses. As on bifocals, the top section of the progressive lens is used for distance viewing, while the bottom is dedicated to closer objects. The center is a smaller section reserved for intermediate vision. New wearers may take some time to grow accustomed to them, especially if they plan to use them while driving. It’s best to wear them at home for a few days to get used to them.

What Is the Best Choice?

Your preference may depend largely on appearance. Many favor the clean look of progressives as opposed to the traditional appearance of bifocals. Those who use computers regularly should also stick with progressives because the center zone makes it easy to view items at that distance. People who are more sedentary, or who don’t necessarily have a need for intermediate-vision correction, may feel comfortable in bifocals.
