Muscle aches and pains aren't the only discomforts you can feel when out for a run. Dentists often field questions about the issue of tooth pain while running, and it's a phenomenon that's more common than you may initially realize. Here are a few reasons dentists usually cite as causes for tooth pain while running.

Grinding or Gritting the Teeth

When a person is focused on a specific task, especially one that requires physical effort, they might be grinding or gritting their teeth without even knowing it. In a dentist's world, this is called bruxism, and it has a direct correlation with tooth pain. Closing one's teeth together and clenching the jaw muscles can exert significant stress and pressure on both the teeth and gums. Most of the time, just being mindful of this can fix the issue. If it doesn't, consider visiting your dentist to get fitted for a mouthguard.

Sensitivity to Cold

dentistIf you're experiencing tooth pain while running outside, a dip in temperature could be the cause. Since most people are in the habit of breathing out of their mouths during heavy physical exercise, the cold air is rushing in and out of the mouth at a brisk pace. Teeth are remarkably sensitive to colder temperatures, so see if breathing through the nose decreases the pain.

Sinus Trouble

In some cases, tooth pain may not be a problem with a tooth at all. It could be coming from the sinuses, which are situated behind the cheeks and upper jaw. Inflammation or infection of the sinuses is sometimes felt in the teeth due to their proximity to one another and the sensitivity of tooth nerves. This is a matter to address with your primary care doctor.

While teeth pain can be uncomfortable when running, it's generally no reason for alarm.
