Golf provides a fantastic way for seniors to keep fit, as it involves a lot of walking as well as arm, shoulder, and torso work. If you wish to spend more time at your favorite Big Island golf course but are not feeling as flexible as you would like, use these exercises to strengthen your muscles and increase your endurance. They may even help your golf handicap.

5 Golf Exercises Senior Players Should Try

1. Ankle Rotations

Sit on a bench or chair with your feet touching the ground. Rotate both feet to the left slowly and bring them back to center. Repeat the stretch, known as the “windshield wiper exercise” to condition your ankles for long days on the golf course.

2. Back Stretch

golfPlace a driver behind your shoulders so it rests gently on your neck. Hold the club at each end and twist to the left. Maintain the position for 15 seconds before twisting to the right. Use this exercise to stretch your back muscles, and remember to stretch as much as is comfortable to prevent injuries.

3. Resisted Chair Rotations

Loosen your hip muscles with this chair exercise. Sit in an armrest-free chair after securing an exercise band to a doorknob. The door should be locked or feature a door jamb before you start, and the distance between the door and the band must be enough to create resistance. Use your arms and torso to pull the band to the side to work your hips.

4. Standing Cross Body Crawl

Stand up and move your hands so they are at shoulder level. Lift your foot and the opposite hand approximately 6 inches each before coming back to your original position. Perform the same movement with the opposite hand and foot. Do up to 20 repetitions five times a day to promote balance and coordination.

5. Golf Club Swings

Gently swing your golf club back and forth once you are sure no one is within range and will get injured. This basic move works muscles throughout your body to warm you up before you play. Swing the club as much as you want to increase muscle flexibility.
