If you need a little pick-me-up to ward off those wintertime blues, celebrate National Margarita Day on February 22nd. A versatile cocktail, margaritas are typically paired with acidic fruits like mango puree, lime, and pineapple, and conjure thoughts of evenings on the beach, relaxing with your friends. Here is a little more information about margaritas, and why you should order one the next time you visit your favorite bar

Margaritas Explained

When Were Margaritas Invented?

The origin of the margarita is somewhat disputed. While many people tie the invention of the famous drink to a Mexican restaurant and bar owner in 1938 named Carlos (Danny) Herrera, others claim that the real inventor was socialite Margaret Sames in 1948, with the nickname Margarita.

In the original tale of the margarita, Carlos Herrera concocted the drink for a beautiful showgirl named Marjorie King, who happened to be allergic to all varieties of alcohol except for tequila. However, stories state that Margaret Sames salted that first rim at a house party in Acapulco. Whichever story is correct, the drink burst onto the scene and continues to be loved by people across the world today.

What Are Some Popular Margarita Flavors?

barWhile the classic margarita recipe calls for simple ingredients like tequila, lime or lemon juice, and salt for the rim, more modern spins on this classic concoction include everything from blackberries to Triple Sec. Margaritas are commonly served in bars as fruitier cocktails, so additions like pureed watermelon, mango, strawberries, blood orange, and pear are popular. Sweeteners like agave nectar and honey are commonly found in margaritas, and sparkling water can be added to make them even more refreshing. Frozen margaritas came into fashion in 1971, and contain a softly frozen puree that pairs perfectly with a hot afternoon.
