There’s nothing like the freedom and exhilaration of hitting the open road on a motorcycle, and it’s a thrilling experience riding in a car can’t replicate. However, like any vehicle, riding a motorcycle has its risks. Whether you’re buying a bike for the first time or renting a one while on vacation, you’ll need to take the proper safety precautions before you hop on to ensure a safe, pleasant experience.

3 Motorcycle Safety Tips

1. Wear a Helmet

A helmet is the most crucial piece of gear you can wear when riding a bike or motorcycle because it’ll protect your head upon impact. Without one, you’re five times more likely to sustain a critical head injury, which could be fatal. In most states, helmets are also required by law, meaning you’ll get pulled over by law enforcement for not wearing one. Motorcycle helmets should also include a face shield and eye protection. Make sure it fits comfortably and won’t fall off.

2. Use Protective Clothing

motorcycleThe helmet is your first line of defense against critical injury, but other gear is also essential to protect against less serious harm. Wear a thick jacket and boots with nonskid soles that reach above the ankle. You’ll also want to use leather or ballistic nylon gloves to protect your hands and improve your grip on the handlebars. Like the helmet, your clothing should fit comfortably snug.

3. Stay at a Safe Distance

Tailgating is dangerous in any vehicle and is a leading cause of collisions. It’s particularly dangerous on a motorcycle since it’s more difficult for other drivers to see you. Keep at least three seconds behind the vehicle to ensure you have enough time to stop in case they break abruptly. Don’t double-up with other bikes in one lane or crowd other vehicles on the road because they are just as dangerous.
