It takes a lot of moving parts to keep your garage door running correctly, and when something breaks down, it isn’t always clear why. In some cases, a simple garage door repair may fix the problem, but in others, a full replacement of certain parts may be necessary. To better diagnose the issue, here’s a brief breakdown of your garage door’s most important components.

Do You Need Garage Door Repair? Here Are 5 Parts to Keep an Eye On

1. Motor

The motor is the most complex part of the garage door, and because it has the most moving pieces, issues are difficult to diagnose. A gear may have broken or come loose, there could be an electrical short, or the motor could simply fail due to age. Attempting to DIY the issue could damage the apparatus even further, so it’s best to reach out to a professional for garage door repair if you suspect a problem with the motor.

2. Springs

The garage door springs handle most of the lifting when you open your garage door. Eventually, they’ll break, and you’ll know from the booming sound they make. In this case, all you need to do is replace them.

3. Remote

Your remote communicates directly with a receiver on the motor to turn it on. When the remote runs out of batteries or is damaged, it can’t send this signal. In other cases, you may be too far away or something may be obstructing the receiver. If the issue isn’t battery-related, you’ll likely need a new remote.

4. Rails

If grime has built up, the rails may simply need a cleaning. Sometimes, they’ve just become unbalanced and need to be leveled again. If there are dings or dents on the rail tracks, however, they may need to be replaced.

5. Sensors

The sensors at the foot of your garage door keep it from closing if anything is below it. If these components are misaligned, there won’t be a reliable connection and your door likely won’t work. However, if your garage door isn’t closing and alignment isn’t causing the issue, one or both of the sensors may be malfunctioning internally.
