A water heater is an essential home appliance that lasts about 10 to 15 years, depending on the type and frequency of use. And when it’s time to install a new one, you’ll need to factor in the size of your home, its number of occupants, and the condition of water that runs through your plumbing system. Here’s a brief outline of the most common types available to help you choose.

Which Water Heater Is Right for My Home?

1. Conventional Water Storage

Conventional heaters, also known as storage tank heaters, are the most common choice. Plumbing pipes pump water into insulated tanks that can hold 30 to 80 gallons. They can be powered either by electricity or gas and are usually installed outdoors or in the basement. Because the water inside the tank is continuously heated, you’ll rarely ever run out of hot water. This type is relatively affordable but eats up a lot of energy.

2. Tankless Water Heater

plumbingTankless heaters are much smaller than conventional storage heaters. Also called on-demand water heaters, they only heat water when needed so you save energy and money. Their compact size makes them ideal for apartments and small homes. But it also means they can heat only two to five gallons a minute, so you may end up waiting for the water in the plumbing to warm up. Large households might also require more than one tankless heater.

3. Hybrid Pump

Hybrid, or heat pumps, are designed with a compressor on the top of the unit that draws heat from the surrounding air to warm up the water in the tank. Similar to conventional heaters, hybrid pump storage tanks have backup resistant elements to ensure you'll always have hot water. However, these heaters are more efficient than conventional ones, consuming up to 60% less electricity, which lowers your energy bill. Their air filters also need to be changed every 1 to 2 years.
