Whether you’ve been invited to a formal wine tasting or you’re trying to choose the perfect bottle to serve at a special event, going into a tasting blind can be intimidating. Fortunately, wine tasting is one of those skills that is fairly easy to pick up. Some basic knowledge on the subject is all you need to get started.

Factors That Influence the Taste of Wine

Before embarking on a wine tasting tour, learn about some of the factors that influence every sip. This will help you develop an appreciation for all that goes into producing a bottle. It probably comes as no surprise that the grape varieties have a major impact on the final outcome. But did you know the earth in which the grapes are planted, and the climate where they grow can also influence the taste of the wine? Everything from the drainage rate of the soil to the temperature of the air will play a role in factors like acidity and sweetness because they impact how fast — and large — the grapes grow.

How to Taste Wine Like a Pro

wineTasting wine should be an enjoyable and leisurely experience, not a complicated dance of smelling, swishing, and spitting. If you want to look like a pro — and get the most out of every sip — start by examining the vino. Swirl it around in the glass, and take note of its viscosity and opacity. This alone can reveal a lot about the pour you’re about to taste. If you look at the legs — the drops that appear on the sides of the glass — for example, you can guess how sweet it will taste. Sweeter varieties have a higher viscosity, so their legs drip more slowly down the glass.

Then it’s time to smell the wine. See if you can identify any familiar flavors. They might be fruity, earthy, woodsy, or rich. Next, take a small sip. Let the liquid roll over your tongue, and consider its texture as it does. If you’re not sure whether you like it at this point, take another sip. Let it coat your mouth, and try to identify distinctive flavors. Finally, decide if you like it. If you do, pour another glass. If not, try another one!
