While any home improvement project should be customized to meet the needs of the people who will utilize the space, a kids' bathroom renovation requires some additional considerations to be both safe and functional. Additionally, you want to make certain the room reflects your children's specific tastes and needs. Below are a few home improvement do’s and don'ts to bear in mind when remodeling a kids' bathroom.

Do:

Integrate lower counters and stepstools into the design.

Young children can't reach traditional sinks or countertops, so you might want to bring these features down to their level. Not only will these items be more accessible, but the room will truly feel like it belongs to the kids. If you're concerned about the practicality of shorter counters and sinks in the long run, consider purchasing stepstools instead. Create a small cubby or storage space to stow the steps when not in use.

Create a personal area for each child.

home improvementKids like to have a space that is their own, even when sharing a room with siblings. In your home improvement plans for the kids' bathroom, designate a separate little area for each child. It need not be large or grand; perhaps a series of small nooks for each to store their toothbrush, floss, and soap. Include a child-level shelf where they can store a basket with their toiletries.

Don't:

Use too much color.

While giving each child their own space is a smart idea, think carefully if you want to paint the whole room in a kid-preferred color; a neon-pink bathroom, for instance, can be intense. Alternatively, you might want to opt for accent pieces like towels and rugs in their favorite color.

Install square or rectangular countertops.

Squares and rectangles have sharp edges. For children of a certain age, these edges come right at eye level. Choose rounded corners to ensure the bathroom is safe for occupants of all sizes.

Use porous or unsealed surfaces.

Bathroom surfaces need to withstand moisture. This is especially important in a child's bathroom, given that splashing and spilled water will likely be a much bigger factor. Only select bathroom surfaces that are water-resistant or thoroughly sealed, like porcelain or ceramic tile. Also, for safety reasons, avoid glass surfaces and glass doors.
