If you own an antique car, it can be an exciting experience to take it on a long road trip. Whether you're visiting a vintage auto show or just enjoying the freedom of the road, this is what your vehicle was made to do. However, older cars have seen a lot of mileage, so before you set out, make sure your vehicle is ready for the road.

How to Prepare for a Trip in an Antique Car

1. Perform Maintenance

Before your wheels hit the road, go over all of the inner workings of your vehicle and make sure it's in good shape. This includes oil, spark plugs, gaskets, belts, fluids, brake pads, tires, and the engine's cooling system.

2. Add Safety Features

Many old cars were built before the era of modern seat belts, so you may need to install some. Replace the tires for better traction, and consider updating the braking system to put safety before authenticity.

3. Road Test

Antique CarsWhen your antique car is tuned up and updated, take the time to work up to your multiday trip. First, take some short drives around the neighborhood and check to see how your car responds both during the drive and afterward, looking for any problems or leaks which may develop. Then, take a longer cruise around town or to the next city over to see how the car handles.

4. Map Your Route

While your old car might be ready for a long trip, it could still struggle if the road is too hilly or wet. If you're caught in a remote area without cell service, you'll have trouble getting help if any problems arise. Think about what states and roads will be easiest on your car, and save the more challenging drives for later.

5. Plan for Emergencies

Make sure your phone is charged and ready and your tool set and spare tire are accessible. Also, keep food, water, a flashlight, road flares, a warm change of clothes, and a first-aid kit in the car in case of an emergency.
