If you care about how your lawn looks, you’ll need to protect it from your pup. Dog urine contains high levels of nitrogen, which can lead to burn spots on the grass. Use the lawn care tips below to keep your yard green and healthy.

How to Take Care of Your Lawn & Dog

1. Increase Water Intake

One way to decrease the nitrogen concentration in your pet’s urine is to make sure they are well hydrated. Place extra water bowls around your home so they can easily drink up whenever they are thirsty. You might also want to incorporate more wet food in their diet and water your lawn more often, especially right after they do their business.

2. Designate a Urination Spot

This can be done with the help of a pheromone-treated post or by leash-training them with treats or other rewards. You can also add a second area and swap out which one your dog uses every few months to give the grass time to recuperate.

3. Install Dog-Friendly Grass

If your lawn has little shade, consider planting a tougher warm-season grass, like Zoysia or Bermuda, that is also capable of withstanding heavy foot traffic, high temperatures, and most diseases. However, no grass is impervious to long-term use, and you should still take preventative lawn care measures.
