Lightning and wind aren’t the only things that can cause tree damage. In fact, fungus is a major nuisance that can grow anywhere and cause serious health issues. But not all fungi are bad. Here’s a beginner’s guide to tree fungus to help you understand whether your trees are in need of professional attention.

An Introduction to Tree Fungi

What Is Tree Fungi?

There are many types of fungi that can grow on trees. The presence of these interesting organisms may indicate that a tree is dying or has begun rotting. Some species, such as the Ganoderma—a type of bracket fungus—are poisonous and leave trees weak and vulnerable to breakage. Others, such as the honey fungus, grow around the trunk or in the soil nearby and poison the organism by forcing its way between the bark and the cambium (outer) layer of the trunk.

For example, mycorrhizal fungi encourage root growth by moving nitrogen and phosphorus from the ground into the roots. They make it easier for trees to take in nutrients from the soil by breaking down substances trees can’t process, such as cellulose, and improving water intake. These fungi can even minimize the risk of drought and prevent tree damage caused by absorbing heavy metal from the soil.

How Should You Handle it?

If you spot fungi growing on a tree in your yard, be prepared to scour images on the internet for the sake of identification. A much more efficient solution is to contact an arborist. They’ll assess the species and let you know if it’s likely to cause tree damage. If not, you can leave the organism alone. Fungi that are harmful should be treated promptly. Some can simply be cut away, while others require limb removal or application of bleach and water mixtures to kill any lingering spores and prevent regrowth.
