Wool is probably the quintessential material for a sweater. Wool sweaters are warm and tactile and go well with most outfits. But they are also delicate and require more care than clothes made of other fabrics like cotton or denim. Dry cleaners are your best bet when it comes to cleaning them, but there are things you can do to keep them from getting damaged.

5 Ways to Care for Wool Sweaters

1. Avoid Washing Machines

Never use a washing machine to clean your sweater. The friction and heat from the cleaning cycle and soap could turn its soft texture into felt. The fuzz from the wool can also detach from the cloth and form hard clumps take damage the washing machine's pump. Take it to the dry cleaners if you’re not confident about cleaning the sweater at home.

2. A Little Soap Goes a Long Way

If dry cleaners are out, hand washing in cold water is another option. But make sure you only use a little soap. One tablespoon of detergent is enough for a medium to large piece while half a tablespoon can clean a small wool sweater.

3. Towel Dry Your Sweater

Wringing excess water from your sweater will deform its shape.  Instead, lay it flat on a clean, dry towel and gently squeeze water from the fabric. Do this by rolling the sweater like a burrito while pressing on it a few times to allow the towel to absorb extra moisture. Unroll it and re-shape.

4. Stay Away From Hangersdry cleaners

Hanging your sweater will change its shape and stretch the neckline. It's best to fold them once dry. Invest in a folding board to make sure there are no creases.

5. Deal With Snags Immediately

Turn your sweater inside out, get a crochet hook, and gently pull in that unruly snag. You can bury it in the weave or tie it into a knot to prevent further unraveling.
