Whether you have an automobile passed down through generations or recently acquired a vintage ride, there are plenty of reasons to participate in an auto show. Doing so affords other enthusiasts a chance to take a look at an important part of automotive history and see how carefully you’ve maintained the investment. Taking the steps outlined here to prepare the car could also increase your chance of receiving top honors at the event.

3 Steps to Get Your Classic Ride Ready for an Auto Show

1. Clean Interior Upholstery & Carpets

To make the interior cabin and trunk presentable, vacuum and clean carpets to remove dirt embedded in the fibers. To remove smudges and give seats a gleaming appearance, wash the vinyl or plastic surfaces with warm water and mild soap. For leather, use cleansers specifically formulated for the material. You can also use a mild detergent solution to clean hinges, jambs, and the back of doors. Wipe metal components down with a dry towel afterward to prevent rusting.

2. Wash & Wax the Exterior

To remove dust particles and additional grime, wash the body with water and an automotive cleaning solution. Use a soft sponge to avoid scratching the finish and windows or damaging tires. Wash the car in a shaded area, as the heat from direct sunlight could cause the suds to evaporate fast and leave streaks behind. Applying wax will give the surfaces a high-gloss shine to make the vehicle look like new again. Just remember to apply materials in the shade, too. This will prevent coats from drying too quickly and causing discoloration.

3. Examine Mechanical Components

Judges might look under the hood during an auto show, so make sure the parts match or are similar to the original components. If you have aftermarket parts installed, for example, consider switching them out with equipment made by the car manufacturer. Doing so could help you score higher points during the judging.

If you are an avid antique car collector in North Carolina or have a rare gem, you can show off your investment at the Charlotte AutoFair. Lots are available for the three-day car exhibit in April, so reserve your spot before they’re all gone. The event is open to buyers and sellers, so you could leave with a new addition to your collection or get top dollar for your ride.
