From preschool to elementary school, ensuring your children are prepared guarantees their academic success. The first step is making sure they have what they need in their backpack to get them through the day. Below are a few tips for packing their bags so they are ready for the day.

What to Pack in Your Child’s Backpack

1. Snacks & Water

preschoolWhile you may pack a delicious lunch, snacks and water are also essential for a long day at preschool and elementary school. Include healthy snacks that won’t spoil in their bag like granola bars, trail mix, dried fruit, or a sealed package of apple slices. Pack a small water bottle, and always check the stash every night to see what needs to be replaced.

2. Emergency Contacts

Safety is important and ensuring your child is protected no matter what is key. Keep a list of emergency contact numbers in their backpack in case they need to call someone for help, especially in critical situations such as getting separated from their teachers or if they have a medical emergency. Instruct them to find a safe adult such as a police officer to help them contact you or another caretaker.

3. Extra Layers

Even if the weather is steady, inside temperatures can fluctuate. When the air conditioning is high, your little one may need an extra sweater to stay comfortable. Pack a backup layer along with an extra set of clothing—including socks, undergarments, and a T-shirt—for preschool kids still prone to accidents and messy spills.

4. Supplies

Keep extra supplies such as pencils, crayons, a notebook, and markers in their backpack in case they lose theirs throughout the day. They will always be prepared if they know they have backups on hand.

5. Comfort Item

Especially for preschool-aged children, a comfort item such as a small toy or blanket will help them when they are away from home. They may never take it out, but knowing it’s there will provide solace during a stressful moment.
