It isn’t always easy for children to articulate how they are feeling, especially when discomfort comes and goes. That’s why dental sensitivity in kids can be hard for parents to detect. However, by understanding the common causes of dental sensitivity and working with their dentist, you can help your little one stay comfortable.

Why Does Your Child Have Sensitive Teeth?

1. Improper Brushing Habits

When children are young, they are still honing their motor skills and mastering brushing and flossing their teeth. Your little one might be brushing too hard and causing small amounts of gum recession, or not brushing hard enough and letting plaque and tartar damage dental enamel. Both issues can lead to sensitivity, so work with your child daily until you are satisfied they are brushing, flossing, and rinsing properly.

2. Undetected Dental Decay

Dental decay can compromise the layer of enamel protecting your child’s teeth, allowing food particles and bacteria to impact the deeper pulp chambers. If your little one has an untreated cavity, they might have trouble eating, drinking, or sleeping. Research has shown that as many as 20% of kids aged five to 11 have at least one untreated cavity, so make sure to bring your child in for preventative checkups with their dentist.

3. Teeth Grinding

dentistMany kids have issues with teeth grinding, also called bruxism, as they sleep. In addition to causing jaw pain, teeth grinding can lead to worn teeth, dental fractures, and even tooth loss. A dentist may prescribe a mouthguard to wear at night to keep your child’s teeth safe.
