Winter conditions introduce a number of potential hazards that can lead to a foot injury. Regardless of if it’s from exposure or the weather, it’s important to take preventive steps. Here are a few of the most common issues, ways to avoid them, and how a podiatrist can help if you experience any injuries.

3 Winter Foot Injuries to Avoid

1. Cracked Skin

Dry winter air can cause cracking in the feet, specifically along the heels. Known as heel fissures, this issue is not only unsightly, but it’s also painful when the cracks go deep enough. To prevent it, regularly moisturize your feet with a product approved by your podiatrist, especially after a warm shower when they might be more prone to drying out. You can also invest in custom insoles to better absorb shock and prevent cracking.

2. Ankle Injuries

podiatrist Slip-and-fall accidents are common when freezing temperatures arrive and can lead to sprains and fractures. Whether you’re walking around town or playing a winter sport, always have the proper shoes on. Select something that fits nicely and has plenty of traction. Boots and other high-top footwear are perfect for adding ankle support. Avoid icy conditions when possible, and if you suspect you’ve injured your ankle, see a podiatrist for an exam and treatment.

3. Athlete’s Foot

Layering socks inside warm, comfy shoes is good for keeping your feet warm, but as you sweat, you increase the potential for athlete’s foot. This bacterial infection occurs when your feet remain moist and can’t breathe, and it’s easy to spread. Invest in socks that wick moisture from the feet, and when possible, give your feet plenty of time to air out.
