Car shopping can sometimes be an intense process, and it's only made more intimidating by the pressure involved in picking the best possible vehicle. To make the experience a smooth and rewarding one, it's wise to do your own inspection of a used car before deciding whether to buy. Below are three tips to help you do this.

How to Inspect a Used Car Prior to Purchasing

1. Look Carefully at the Exterior

The outside of a used car can tell you a lot about its internal condition. A few minor scrapes and dings are to be expected, but dents, cracks, and especially rust should give you pause. These could signal the need for costly repair issues now or in the near future. Also, ensure that all the lights are in proper working order. You want a vehicle that is safe to drive off the lot.

2. Check the Engine

While the sound of a clean, strong engine is a good sign, you should also be looking under the hood. The engine and battery should be relatively clean and free of rust, and there should be no loose or cracked hoses or belts. Keep an eye out for leaks as well, both on the engine itself and under the vehicle.

3. Take It for a Test Drive
