Children are naturally curious, and this can lead them into all sorts of accidents. In the US an average of 7 children are rushed to emergency rooms for treatment for electrical burns or shock daily. Most of these are caused by accidents that happen at home when adults are present. It's up to parents to ensure that children are safe and to teach them to remain that way. Here are tips that any electrical contractor would advise to parents.

3 Electrical Safety Tips for Kids

1. Use Outlet Covers

Children will stick all kinds of things in electric outlets. Stop them from getting shocked by asking your electrical contractor to put covers or tamper-resistant receptacles on all outlets. The receptacles have shutters that cover the plug slots and prevent little fingers from going inside the outlet.

2. Plug and Unplug Properly

Cracked cords or exposed wires can cause electrical shocks or cause a fire. Replace frayed cords immediately. Babies and toddlers also have a habit of putting things in their mouths so make sure you keep wires away from their little hands.

3. Keep Devices Away From Water

Electronics and water don't mix. With kids today having personal mobile devices, parents have to be extra careful and make sure their children don't bring these gadgets into the bathtub or shower with them. Lead by example and make sure that you don't bring your electronics into the bathroom or near the sink when washing dishes. Have your electrical contractor install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) in any room with water (ex, kitchen, bathroom, laundry room) to prevent electric shocks.
