Your car relies on oil to function. This liquid provides lubrication for fast-moving parts and cooling for the entire engine, and requires regular oil changes to keep it clean and topped up. If you skip your oil change and let your reservoir run low, you'll quickly encounter problems.

What Happens Without an Oil Change?

Lower Efficiency

In the early stages of oil depletion, your car will begin to produce less power for the same amount of gasoline. This is due to the major increase in friction as the oil breaks down and loses its lubricating power. The less oil in your engine, the more quickly this will occur because the oil is essentially doing more work.

Engine Deposits

As the oil that is left breaks down, it forms unwanted compounds like tar and varnish which can adhere to different parts of the engine's inner workings. These deposits can be hard or sticky, and continue to increase friction and lower efficiency. At this point, even if you add oil to the engine, it will not perform the same.

Thrown Rod

Oil ChangeWhen the lubricating power of the oil hits a critical low, the friction working against a rod or piston can be greater than the physical strength of the component itself. When this happens, instead of generating power for your vehicle, all the force of your engine is concentrated in that rod, bending it severely out of shape. When this happens, it causes catastrophic damage to the engine. There's no recovery once an engine has thrown a rod; it will need to be replaced completely for the vehicle to run again.
