In addition to providing a smooth and resilient surface where you can drive and park, your asphalt driveway is also a great place for your kids to play. Well-sealed blacktop paving provides a smooth enough surface to draw on with chalk, and the outdoor location means kids can run around and exercise their bodies as well as their creativity. To get you started, here are five games and activities you can do with chalk and an asphalt driveway.

Chalk Games for Your Driveway

1. Classics

Simple, classic games like hopscotch and four square are easy and familiar. Use the rules you grew up with, or look up the basics online. You can also add silly challenges for your kids, like playing a game backward.

2. Mazes

Use your chalk to draw a maze on the ground big enough to walk through. Then have your children solve it. For an extra challenge, time your children to see who can finish the maze fastest. When they're done, have them draw a maze for you to solve.

3. Swimmers & Sharks

This game is a variation on musical chairs. Draw a large circle to represent the island. Tell your children "time to swim!" and have them pretend to swim around outside the circle. After a short time, call "it's a shark!" and have them run back to the island. Anyone who doesn't fit on the island is out. Each round, redraw the island smaller until only one kid is left—they can be the leader when you play the game again.

4. Shadow Trace

Asphalt DrivewayOn a sunny day, have one kid stand in any pose they want, and have another kid trace their shadow on the ground. Try striking silly poses or creating shapes with your shadows! Once they're drawn, the outlines can be colored in or decorated.

5. Pretend Town

Space your children out along your asphalt driveway and have them each draw a house around themselves. Have them decorate it as they like or fill it with objects. Then draw roads leading to the houses, trees and animals outside, and additional buildings for your town. This can lead to hours of role-playing fun.
