3 Stretches to Prevent Sports Injuries

1. Lunges

From a kneeling position, put one leg forward so your foot is on the ground and your knee is at a 90-degree angle. Lean forward until you feel a gentle stretch, then hold for 30 seconds before switching sides.

2. Seated Lotus Stretch

The lotus stretch increases hip flexibility and loosens up the groin muscles, which are especially susceptible to sports injuries. Start from a seated position and put the soles of your feet together. Grasping your feet with both hands, place your forearms on top of your thighs and lean forward, which should push your knees toward the floor. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, relax, then repeat three to five times.

3. Shoulder Blade Rotations

Stretching and strengthening your shoulder muscles will help avoid injuries to your neck and other fragile areas. Start by holding a resistance band or tube in front of you, palms upwards, with your elbows tucked into your sides. Gently spread your hands outward, stretching the band and pulling your shoulder blades together. For the best results, repeat the stretch 10 to 20 times.
