Snowmobiling is both a fun hobby and practical way to get around during winter. The downside is that cold and icy conditions can compromise your trip if you aren’t properly prepared. That’s why the right dress is essential. By knowing what to wear and what to avoid, you can make the most of your snowmobile experience and ensure you stay warm and dry when out in the elements.

Do:

Wear layers.

It’s not enough to wear a winter jacket and sweatshirt when exposed to winter conditions on a snowmobile. Layer your clothing with several lighter, tight garments that are close to the skin. Make sure these are not cotton, as it retains moisture. Add a snowmobile suit, face mask, helmet, goggles, gloves, wool or fleece socks, and proper footwear to round out your riding wardrobe.

Get a special pair of boots.

snowmobileYour everyday boots aren’t meant to withstand the rigors of a snowmobile ride. Instead, get a pair specifically made for snowmobiling. These will be made of a combination of rubber exterior and a breathable liner made of wool or fleece to keep you both warm and well insulated.

Don’t:

Skip the crucial outer layer.

The outer layer is perhaps the most important piece of snowmobile gear that you’re going to wear. This layer must be fully wind and waterproof to repel snow and ice. Look for suits made of acrylic, gore-tex, or a similar synthetic material.

Ignore your headgear.

Safety is paramount when riding. Always don the appropriate goggles to keep precipitation out of your eyes, and most importantly, wear a helmet. Helmets should be snug and Department of Transportation-approved in the event of an accident.
