Swimming with sharks is an incredible, unique experience. While taking a dip in open water usually makes the sharks keep their distance, going on a cage dive allows you to get up close and personal with these amazing animals in a safe environment. Although you’re likely to never forget your time in the water, having photos from your dive will serve as a vivid reminder of the thrill for the rest of your life. Here are some tips for getting the best underwater shots.

How to Get a Great Shark Photo

1. Find a Good Position

cage diveYou’ll likely be swimming with other shark seekers during your cage dive, so it’s important to try to position yourself for optimal photo-taking. While nestling up to a corner of the cage will get you closer to the sharks that come by, it also limits your field of view. Try to stay in the middle of the cage so you have 360 degree camera access to your surroundings.

2. Use the Bars to Your Advantage

Between the motion of the water and the movement of your companions, it can be tough to keep your camera steady while on a cage dive. Consider using the cage bars to help the shakiness. By placing your camera against a bar, you’ll be able to capture a cage-free shot while getting optimal stability.

3. Shoot Continuously

If your camera has the ability, shoot in continuous mode to capture as many images as you can each time a shark swims by. If your camera doesn’t have this capability, make sure you shoot with the highest shutter speed possible to snap clear photos during their movements.
