It’s hard to avoid looking at a screen these days—between workplace computers and smartphones. However, if your eyes are straining after prolonged screen exposure then you probably know it’s not healthy for you. Part of the problem comes from the blue light transmitted by our devices, but by taking the simple eye care steps below, you can minimize its effect on your vision.

What Does Blue Light Do?

Blue light typically comes from LED and LCD screens and fluorescent lighting. This short-wavelength, high-intensity form of radiation can cause eye strain, which includes dry, fatigued, or irritated eyes. Some people can have trouble focusing on objects and may eventually need corrective lenses. More seriously, it can lead to other eye care issues like age-related macular degeneration, in which the retina of the eye deteriorates, causing vision to be blurred or wavy.

Ways to Minimize the Effects of Blue Light

Reducing your exposure to blue light sources is the best way to minimize potential damage to the eyes. Change your device settings or use a blue light filtering screen protector. Limit your screen time as much as possible, and get up to take breaks every couple of hours. Use soft yellow light bulbs instead of cool, blueish ones, and see if you can turn the fluorescent lights in the office off in favor of a desk lamp.

Even if you don’t need corrective lenses, there are non-prescription eyeglasses available that filter blue light. If, however, you fear you have already been over-exposed, schedule an appointment with an optometrist to check your eye health and recommend solutions.
