As any collector or enthusiast of antique cars can attest, automobiles have undergone many changes over the years, and few components demonstrate this better than engines. Following its initial run of four-cylinder engines, Ford® helped revolutionize the auto industry again with its flathead V-8 engine. This may not have been the first V-8 engine to hit the market, but it certainly proved to be one of the most influential.

Early Innovations

antique carsThe Ford flathead V-8 engine was first introduced in December of 1931. The design used a single-piece cast, two water pumps, and a single belt for the engine’s fan and generator. As a flathead—or “side-valve”—engine, rather than the standard overhead valve design of the time, the V-8 engine enjoyed lower production costs. This was due in part to a simple design that eliminated components such as rocker arms and pushrods.

It didn’t take long for extra improvements to be added. The first flathead V-8 engine often experienced seized crankshaft bearings and cracks. Aluminum heads, new intake manifolds, and other improvements helped improve durability, power, and reliability.

Continuing Upgrades

As early vehicles that used flathead V-8 engines began to be considered antique cars, Ford upgraded the engine to deliver even more power. Increases in head stud count and main journal size gave flathead V-8 engines of the 1940s greater horsepower and torque. Many of these engines were even used during World War II.

Further changes continued through the early 1950s, with updates to the bellhousing, valve guides, exhaust system, and pistons. As a result, late-model flathead V-8 engines could achieve 106 horsepower. The durable engine design lasted until 1953, when the more powerful overhead valve V-8 became the new production standard.
