In order to keep your septic system working properly, it’s important to know how it works. Understanding the purpose of each component of your system can help you diagnose potential problems and find quick solutions. Here is a beginner’s guide to the essential parts of your septic system.

What to Know About Each Component of Your Septic System

Septic Tank

The tank is the largest and most well-known component. It is a large, watertight container that is located underground. It is made to hold all of the waste that comes through your plumbing system. In the tank, the water separates from the solid waste so that it can be distributed. Your septic tank requires regular maintenance, usually needing to be pumped every few years to remove solid waste and clear any backups in the plumbing system.

Distribution Boxseptic system

Once water leaves the septic tank, it makes its way to the distribution box. This box is normally placed downhill from the tank so that water flows to it naturally. It then sends water to several different distribution lines to flow to various parts of your leach field, instead of flooding one particular area. If you notice any flooding or uneven ground in your field, you may need to have the box cleared or replaced.

Leach Field

The leach field is the ground where the water drains after it has been separated from the waste. Pipes with small perforations are placed throughout the ground so that water is distributed evenly, then the soil continues to treat that water once it exits the tank. The field needs to have soil with quality drainage in order to absorb the water and remove bacteria and viruses. If the field overflows with water, the soil may be unsuitable or the pipes may need to be replaced.
