It all started in 1969, when Fritz Diekvoss realized his childhood dream of starting his own business. He wasn’t quite sure what to sell at first, but pizza was on the menu when the doors of The Pizza Haven finally opened on February 28 in Rhinelander, WI. Fifty years later, the family-owned Italian restaurant continues to thrive—and it shows no signs of slowing. What Makes the Restaurant Special?

The beauty of The Pizza Haven is in its commitment to family and community. It’s that sense of togetherness that drives the family traditions still present in the restaurant’s kitchen today. The tomato sauce is made from scratch and is derived from a recipe brought from Italy to America by Marie and Bruno Grimelli, who previously owned the property.

Along with sauces, every single dish, from pizza to pasta to garlic bread, is made entirely by hand. “If you ate here 50 years ago and came back today, it would taste exactly the same. That’s why people keep coming back,” says Pam Young, Fritz’s daughter. “We mix the sausage ourselves and the bread dough is made fresh, nothing is pre-made, and though it takes longer, you can definitely taste the difference.” 

What Are Some Standout Dishes?

For anyone craving pasta, a bowl of spaghetti topped with homemade tomato sauce is a must. There are also several alfredo dishes that tempt anyone with their decadent flavor profiles. Of course, it wouldn’t be a visit to The Pizza Haven without a taste of their renowned pizza!

The Fritz Deluxe and Helen Deluxe pies both earn “most requested” honors—they’re piled with meats and vegetables to satisfy even the pickiest of palates.
