Besides their easy upkeep and durability, hardwood floors are popular for the sophistication and classic elegance they add to home interiors. But like most other flooring materials, hardwood tends to get cold during the winter. While they can withstand a bit of warmth from heating indoors, they may warp if exposed to high temperatures for too long. Below are a few tips for keeping your hardwood floors warm and comfortable to the touch without damaging them.

4 Tips for Heating Up Your Flooring

1. Boost Humidity

Rooms that have hardwood flooring require balancing high temperatures with low humidity levels. When running the heat, your interiors become drier than normal. And humidity levels near or below 30% can dry out and warp your hardwood floors. Consider using a humidifier to increase the moisture in your home to reduce the chances of warping your floors. You can also install a hygrometer to monitor relative humidity throughout the house and automatically switch off the heater whenever it gets too dry.

2. Improve Your Insulation

You don’t have to always rely on cranking up the heater for warmth. Instead, make sure your insulation is up to par for more efficient heating indoors. Before winter gets into full swing, use caulk and weatherstripping on drafty doors and windows to prevent warm air from leaking out. Not only does improving your insulation protect your hardwood floors, but it also reduces your heating costs.

3. Bring in Rugs

Rugs absorb and store a significant about of heat, particularly when they are textured and dark in color. A snug rug will keep a warm barrier between your feet and the cold hardwood flooring. After covering the floor with a rug, apply pads or tape underneath the rug to prevent it from slipping. It’s also a good idea to place the rugs close to exterior entryways where floors tend to be the coldest and sustain the most damage.

4. Refinish
