No matter where you go, screens are all around you—whether it’s work or home or in your pocket. Thanks to computer use, more people need eyeglasses or contacts than ever before, and eye strain is becoming increasingly more common. If you spend a lot of time in front of a screen, here’s what you can do to prevent digital eye strain.

How to Reduce Digital Eye Strain

1. Wear Blue Light Glasses

You can get a blue light protective coating on your prescription eyeglasses if you spend a lot of time in front of a screen. Even if you don’t need eyeglasses or prefer contacts, you can get nonprescription glasses with the blue light coating to protect your vision.

2. Alter Your Display Settings

Many computer monitors, devices, and televisions offer nighttime settings that reduce or turn off blue light. You can set this filter for daytime, too. If you don’t have this setting, reducing the contrast and brightness can also reduce the effects of eye strain.

3. Take Breaks

eyeglassesTake 10–15 minute breaks every couple of hours to rest your eyes and have them focus on long-distance objects. Take a walk outside or simply sit back from your chair and close your eyes for a few minutes to prevent eye dryness. If possible, follow the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

4. Minimize Glare

Harsh glare on shiny screens from sunlight or overhead lighting contributes to eye strain. Choose screens with matte surfaces or use glare-reducing screen protectors. If your computer catches glare from a window, change your angle or close the blinds slightly. Eyeglasses can also be made with an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare from your lenses.

5. Reduce Screen Time

You may not be able to reduce your screen time at work, but when you come home, consider cutting back. Between office computers, tablets, smartphones, and television, you likely spend a lot of time in front of a screen. Prioritize and find ways to cut back where you can.
