Quality tires are essential for maintaining your vehicle’s efficiency and keeping you safe on the road. Once they’ve passed their useful life, however, it’s important to replace them with newer ones that have the proper tread and pressure levels. If you make this investment, you’ll want to keep them in usable condition for as long as possible. Here are a few tire maintenance tips you can take to extend their lifespan.

Top 3 Steps to Properly Maintain Your Tires

1. Check the Alignment

Improper alignment can lead to premature wear on your tires. Have your alignment checked by a professional about once per year, or if you notice anything unusual, such as your car veering to one side when you’re driving down a straight road.

2. Maintain Optimal Pressure

tiresWhen your tires are over-inflated, the tread in the middle wears more quickly than it should. When they’re under-inflated, the tread along the sides gets worn down faster. To keep your tires going for as long as possible, you need that tread to wear evenly. Check your owner’s manual or the label on your doorjamb for the optimal pressure level. Then, check your tires about once per month and have them refilled whenever necessary. Note that drops in temperature can affect tire pressure, making it especially important to monitor your wheels in the winter.

3. Rotate Regularly

Tires on the front axle tend to wear differently than those on the back axle. Having them rotated ensures that they wear evenly and helps you prevent handling issues. Ideally, you should have your tires rotated about every 5,000 to 6,000 miles to prevent uneven wear. For added convenience, many choose to simply have this service done every time they get an oil change.
