Texting and social networking on smartphones and other devices is something people do throughout the day, every day, with some studies showing the daily amount to be over four hours. Bending over your phone over time can generate neck pain, so it pays to be proactive—anything you can do to help yourself is useful. Chronic neck pain can be debilitating, so keep the following in mind as you surf away.

Ways to Prevent Neck Pain From Smartphone Use

1. Take Breaks

neck pain As with any activity that puts your body out of its natural posture, it’s best to take breaks. If you’re having an extensive text conversation or social media session, take a break every half hour for several minutes. Stand up, stretch, rotate your neck, and loosen your muscles. Try tucking your chin into your chest and then raising it to the ceiling, then look over each shoulder.

2. Raise Your Screen

It’s second nature to hold your phone near your stomach, and if you’re like most people, you look down to read the screen. This can gradually put serious strain on your neck. To prevent neck pain, raise your screen higher and hold it roughly at eye level. You’ll keep your neck in its natural position. Do the same if you work long hours at a computer, or invest in a second screen you can position higher.

3. Listen to Your Body

Paying attention to your body’s reaction to long bouts of device use is key. If you experience pain, stop. If you decide to return but feel your body is still tired, reconsider. You can avoid serious injury this way. Headaches and more constant pain mean that you may need more extensive treatment with the help of a chiropractor.
