1. Fuel & Oil Filters

When winterizing your boat, don’t forget to replace old, dirty filters along with the fluids. They trap any impurities in the engine for better, more efficient performance on the water. Check for leaks in the system before changing the filters, as you might need to replace other engine parts like belts and impellers as well.

2. Sleeve Bearings

Since the propulsion and drive systems are normally submerged in water, they can only be inspected when the boat is hauled out for the off-season. Check the propeller shaft while inside the sleeve bearing to see if it fits snugly. If you notice a bit of wiggle room or space, replace the bad bearing before it leads to further damage to your shaft seals, engine mounts, or propeller shaft.

3. Zinc Anodes

Your boat is susceptible to corrosion, so zinc anodes play an essential role in preventing this. They will corrode quicker than other metal boat parts, including the shaft, propeller, rudders, or stern drive. This will keep other metallic components safe against corrosion, even when left under water. Switch out your old anode and opt for a heavier one if it gets rusted or damaged within a short time.

4. Propeller

Among the key parts of a boat is the propeller. Without it, accelerating and navigating through the waters can be challenging. Inspect your propeller for any dings, cracks, or missing pieces since these can affect engine performance and fuel economy as well. If you notice vibrations, harder maneuverability, or poor performance, replace your propeller instead of fixing it.

5. Chains or Ropes

Be sure to inspect the chains or ropes that are holding your anchor. When the galvanization on the chains wears off, the links become rusty and weak over time. Instead of repairing, opt to replace the entire chain for more efficient operation. Similarly, change the ropes if they look frayed or are already splitting in some spots—you’re better off with a new one.
