Whether you have a green thumb or just started gardening as a hobby, winter weather could put a damper on your efforts. In many areas of the country, the frigid conditions can damage plant structures. Being mindful of what you plant and following the additional tips outlined here will ensure you won’t have to wait until spring to tend to your garden.

3 Gardening Tips for Winter

1. Put a Cold Frame in the Yard

Eagle-River-Anchorage-plantsIf you want to plant outdoors during the winter months, install a cold frame in the yard. The structures look similar to greenhouses but are much smaller, often portable, and unheated. The enclosures create a microclimate to control air exposure and keep the soil temperature insulated to aid plant growth. The vegetation receives heat and light from the sun that shines through the glass or plexiglass roof.

2. Start Seeds Inside

If the ground is frozen, it’s best to wait until the surface thaws before trying to put plants in the ground. In the meantime, you can begin seeding inside the house. You can put the seeds in containers with soil, watering the pots accordingly, and keeping them in an area that receives light. Taking these measures will ensure the roots remain strong for transplanting outdoors when spring arrives.

3. Plant Winter Vegetables

Although some plants won’t fare well in cold conditions, there are others that thrive during winter. If you want to plant vegetables, for example, look for hardy varieties. The growing season for onions is long and the vegetables need little care during the winter months for summer harvesting. Peas also prefer the cold and can withstand light frost, while carrots also mature in cold air with ample sunlight.
