If you are new to dentures, you might be wondering how to take care of your new smile. While dentures aren’t susceptible to oral issues such as tooth decay and cavities, they can endure other types of damage, which is why your dentist still recommends regular cleanings and fitting appointments. Here are a few important do’s and don’ts for daily denture care.

Do:

Rinse them after eating.

While it is important to eat with dentures to stimulate your gums and periodontal arch, it’s equally crucial to rinse them with water and mouthwash after eating to prevent oral infections, bad breath, and stains. Rinsing them helps whisk away lingering food particles, keeping your mouth clean and healthy.

Soak them overnight.

To keep them in good condition, your dentist may recommend soaking them in water or a special disinfectant solution for dentures. By keeping them wet, you are recreating the environment in your mouth, helping your prosthetic to stay in good shape. The extra lubrication will also ensure that they don’t cut into your gums.

Don’t:

Let them dry out.

dentistIf dentures dry out, they can crack or warp, which can impact the way they fit into your mouth. Never let them dry out by soaking them in a cup of room-temperature water when you’re not using them. If they start to show signs of dryness, your dentist will recommend a special solution to restore moisture.

Ignore fit problems.

If they don’t fit properly, they could put extra strain on your gum tissue, leading to abrasions, blisters, and sore spots. Dentists can adjust the fit by polishing certain portions or relining the interior. If you develop fit issues with your dentures, report the problem to your dentist immediately.
