Many people consider hiring a career coach as they pursue their careers. But not many think of getting guidance as they prepare to retire after a long career. Preparing for “Phase II” isn’t just a question of setting aside money; it’s about taking time to reflect on what you will do after exiting your successful career so that instead of feeling anxious or nervous, you feel energized and confident. Find out how to get ready below.

3 Career Consultant Tips to Prepare for Retirement

1. Create New Experiences

After retirement, you have more free time than you did as a working adult and presumably more financial means. Make the most of it by trying new experiences. This could mean traveling to more distant places, learning to cook a favorite cuisine, taking a photography course with an “old fashioned” camera, or collecting art — to name just a few examples.

2. Rethink Your Comfort Zone

A common misconception about aging is that people get more stubborn and settled in their ways — hence the saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Your retirement or Phase II years are the perfect time to rethink your comfort zone and take steps to push beyond it. From joining a nonprofit, taking up a new sport, mentoring teens, mastering a language, growing roses, taking an acting class, traveling to parts unknown –  seize this time in your life to push your boundaries and try something that brings a smile to your face and some learning edge to your days.

3. Make a Concrete Plan

Hike in Patagonia? Spend more time with the family?  Play on more golf courses? Renovate the country home? Whatever your portfolio of “feel good” activities includes, think through the steps to get there. A career coach who works in retirement transitions can offer support — plus, having an external person to ask you good questions before Phase II arrives and keep you focused on “what’s next” will allow you to greet retirement with enthusiasm, energy and joy.
