Dentures are a great solution to extensive oral health issues, and they’re also an investment. You want to be confident you get the most from them and your smile. There are essential do’s and don’ts of denture care. Sticking to them will ensure your mouth stays healthy and that you get years of service.

Do:

Brush them.

Just because dentures are prosthetics doesn’t mean they aren’t susceptible to damage. You need to brush them at least once a day so they hold up, just like your regular teeth. The same bacteria that cause tooth decay may wear them down and collect in the plate, resulting in harm to your gums. Ask your dentist for a demonstration on how to brush them as well as preferred products to use.

Take them out before sleeping.

Before you go to bed or take a nap, remove your dentures. You gum tissue needs to recover after wearing them for long periods of time. Place them in a cup of warm water and cleaning solution. This will ensure they stay moist and clean and are ready for use when you wake up.

Don’t:

Neglect oral care.

Although some or all of your teeth are gone, you still need to care for your mouth. Plaque and bacteria can build up on the gums, tongue, and roof of the mouth and lead to infections and other issues. Changes in the shape of your gums can also impact how your dentures fit, and you’ll have to go through a refitting and possibly buy replacements. Make sure to stick with the advised exam schedule your dentist provides.

Eat aggressively.

denturesOnce you become accustomed to eating with your dentures, make sure you stick with smaller bites. It’s easier to eat this way. Avoid tugging motions while chewing, and never bite down on hard foods, as you may chip the teeth. For foods such as apples, consider slicing them into softer, more manageable bites rather than biting into them.
