In pristine condition, a backyard deck can turn ordinary evenings into blissful nights and long weekends into outdoor events. However, if your deck is suffering from deterioration or structural problems, you could be putting your family and friends in harm’s way. Not sure if your deck needs to be replaced? If you see any of the warning signs below, it’s due for an upgrade.

3 Signs You Need a New Deck

1. Rotted Posts

If the posts holding your deck up are sitting on the footings underneath, they will easily absorb moisture from rain and snowfall. Over time, this will weaken the posts, even causing them to rot. To avoid the risk of a total collapse, it’s crucial to have your deck replaced with pressure treated or concrete footings that won’t fall prey to water damage.

2. Shaky Railings

As you lean against the railing of your deck to peer at the trees or up at the stars, the wooden structure should support you. However, if it wobbles or shakes as you do so, you probably need a new deck. This poses a significant safety hazard for people of all ages, but especially for those who have mobility challenges. Trying to reinforce the railing with nails on your own will only provide a short-term solution. Or, it could even make the situation worse if you’re not sure what you’re doing.

3. Mold Growth

deckMoisture is a hazard to almost all outdoor structures, but those made of wood require extra protection. Therefore, if there’s no flashing on the ledger—the structure that separates your home from your deck, this area won’t be watertight. In addition to weakening the connection between your deck and your home, this might allow liquid to seep into the latter, causing significant water damage. If you notice parts of your deck warping or see mold growing near the ledger, replacement is imperative.
